Raw Milk Drinkers

topofpage

Hello all! We are a small family farm in west Petaluma. For all of you who love fresh raw milk, we are offering cow shares for our cow Rosie. For those of you who are not familiar with cow shares, they are the legal way for consumers to get raw milk directly from a farm. The consumer buys a 'share' in the cow and becomes a temporary 'owner' to receive a portion of her milk. One share is the equivalent to one gallon a week. We currently provide milk to the Petaluma area and deliver to Marin and the East Bay. We may add deliveries to other areas if there is enough interest.

Rosie, our A2 Jersey cow, comes from a local organic dairy (For more information on A2 milk read the article below).  We feed her organic hay and alfalfa as well as a small amount of organic grain, minerals, kelp, beet pulp, coconut meal, a pro biotic, and apple cider vinegar in her water. She also gets lots of tender loving care! Equally important is the fact that we use all natural products to sanitize the milking equipment (food grade hydrogen peroxide) and milk bottles.

We can also provide eggs, homemade yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, beet kvass, kombucha, and bone broths (all of which can be delivered with your milk or picked up at the farm).  Our hens are so free-range that they end up walking in the house if we leave the door open and they lay their eggs in comfortable places like the cow's manger.

A little about us: Kevin grew up on his family's farm in Ireland. Besides taking care of the cattle, hens, and sheep, he worked every weekend for his neighbors gathering potatoes and picking strawberries to save up to buy his first calf at eleven. By fourteen, he was milking the family cow and driving the tractor. After moving to the U.S in his mid twenties, it was always his dream to settle down and farm again. Jenny (me) is a native to Sonoma County and also grew up with animals and the same dream. Together, we now live with our two children, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, cats, dog, and Rosie. We will soon be bringing home a companion for Rosie. We are extremely committed to making sure that our animals are healthy and happy. It is important to us as stewards of the land and as parents. That is why we have Rosie and our other animals on pasture year round and feed them what we feel is best for them and us. We welcome visitors. As a family, we think it is especially important for children to see where their food comes from. We are delighted that Rosie is able to provide nourishment to so many families.

For those of you interested in joining our cow share, please contact us at orgabainnefarm@yahoo.com

Thanks so much!

Kevin and Jenny Kilpatrick

River Monster Project

topofpage

Have you seen it? Smelled it?

Come across it on a midnight stroll along the Petaluma River?

We've been wondering why after all the encounters with our slimy  friend
over the years that no-one has been able to capture it.  Whether  you've
seen  it  in the  river,  on the  muddy  river  banks    or sitting at a
riverfront cafe, it's your pen and paper that are finally going  to show
the world what our River Monster really looks like.

This is a call for artists for our April group show  and  we  would love
to see young people involved with their  families!  We are  sending this
out to more than our usual  group  of  artists  to  draw  from  a larger
group. I f you have not participated as an artist in one  of  our shows,
please pay attention to the particulars below.

Your artwork needs to be delivered by April 19th  and will  be  shown to
the world on April 23rd at multiple locations. We must  have  the art no
later then THE 19TH OR IT WONT BE INCLUDED IN SHOW and it must  be ready
to hang ... we want  a  lot  of monsters  so  grab  grandpa  and  all your
neighbors  and  co-workers  and  have  them  draw  or paint   a monster.

PLS LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN DO IT AND HOW MANY OTHERS...ASAP

It's time for the river monster to see the light of day!

http://rivertownrevival.com/river-monster-project/

All  art  must  have  any  hardware  necessary  for  hanging   in place.
Boomerang Gallery/Heebejeebe reserves the right to refuse  any  art that
is unprepared. We also request  that  artists  make  prior  arrangements
with the gallery in the event that a piece has special needs
(electricity, etc) or if a  piece  is  especially  large.  Space  in our
gallery is  limited  and we  ask  that  artists  be  conscious  of that.

Is Good Posture Bad for Your Back?

topofpage

Are you tired of having back or joint pain? You can learn how to be free of pain! Learning what is the underlying cause of your pain will enable you to make changes that eliminate your pain. Almost everyone in highly industrialized countries has adopted a modern posture that is misaligned and so pervasive we can't even see it. Many treatments don't address the underlying cause of pain.

Learning a set of simple, specific guidelines can bring you relief from pain anytime, anywhere. The same guidelines that take away your pain also straighten your spine.

Come to a 2 hour Balance Method workshop - "The 3 Myths That are Causing Your Back Pain". Mention where you heard about this for your complimentary ticket!

IN PETALUMA: Monday, April 26 from 6:30-8:30 pm.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Seating is limited. To register, call 707-658-2599 or visit www.sonomabodybalance.com

Why do people in some countries have no back pain? 80% of the population in the United States suffers from back pain, compared to only 5% in many other countries, such as Portugal and Greece. These healthy people move slightly differently than we do. The teaching of the Balance Center is based on more than 35 years of research on these healthy populations. When you stand, bend, sit, walk, and sleep as these people do, your pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated.

SIX WAYS THIS APPROACH IS UNIQUE:

-Balance is based on studying healthy people
-No special devices, special equipment or special chairs are needed
-No exercises or radical positions are required
-Balance dramatically improves your posture
-You use this information immediately in your car, at work, even at the
movies
-A slight shift in position brings relief

WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE RESULTS OF BALANCE?

“I have successfully used Balance Center instructions as part of a comprehensive treatment program for my patients with painful spinal conditions.”
- William Firtch, M.D.

"This class was a revelation for me. It increased my awareness of being out of Balance and I learned simple changes I can make to become more balanced and pain free. It was powerful learning what I can do on a daily basis to avoid pain. Dana taught us simple techniques to use everyday to correct bad posture and live pain free. It’s given me hope and has been a life changing experience that has put me back in control ."
- Julie Shapiro, Oakland, CA

“I’ve tried almost all there is to try and Balance has taught me how to take care of my own back, rather than spending tons of money.”
- Clyde Lerner, Independent computer consultant

"Before I took the Balance class, I experienced chronic neck, low back, hip, and gluteal tension, in spite of the fact that I received weekly chiropractic adjustments. While taking the class, my tension decreased significantly. The tools I learned in the class also enabled me to teach basic sitting skills to patients which helped eliminate a major cause of recurring back pain for many of them."
-Jay Bunker, Chiropractor

Taught by Dana Davis, MA, Senior Certified Instructor by the Balance Center in Palo Alto and Certified Yoga Teacher. Class includes slides, practice sitting and bending in Balance, anatomy and individual hands-on guidance. Enrollment is limited. For more information, visit www.sonomabodybalance.com. For information about the Balance Center, visit www.balancecenter.com.

American Graffiti Hub Cap Painting Event

topofpage

Hi everyone,

As most of you know I have been coordinating the Hub Cap Painting event for American Graffiti for the last 4 years.

Last year we had 56 hub caps painted by local artists, distributed the hub caps around town for a silent auction. The silent auction was held and we raised about $4000 for local charities.

This year, I already have about 20 different artists pre painting more than 50 hub caps to be delivered to me on May 1. In addition to the silent auction I will also have artist painting hub caps the day of the event May 15.

If you agree to have hub caps in your gallery for the silent auction I will provide you with the following:

1. Hub Caps to be on display May 5, or sooner, thru May 16

2. Information on each artist, the name of each piece, and the charity for which the artist selected. The Artist decides which charity they are painting the hub cap for. This year’s charities are: PETALUMA SAVE A LIFE, PETALUMA CHILDREN’S DIABETES, PETALUMA’S BREAST SAVER AVON WALK TEAM.

3. Map of all hub cap locations so participants can see all the hub caps painted by artists

4. Silent Auction Bid Sheet

5. Hub Cap Poster for your window

6. Bid Info Sheet for each hub cap

7. SILENT AUCTION starts May 8 & finishes May 16 when you close your business.

8. You will be responsible for contacting all successful bidders and collecting their money and giving them their winning hub cap.

9. You will also return all bid sheets/cash to me the following week

10. I will present a single check to each charity at a scheduled event once all caps have been accounted for and will let you know the date.

PLEASE let me know NLT Friday, April 23 if you are interested in exhibiting hub caps in your stores.

I hope you do participate because it is lots of fun, for a great cause, and helps to drive people to your gallery during the annual American Graffiti Event.

To see examples from last year visit http://www.hausfortuna.com/category/american_graffiti/

I look forward to hearing back that you will support this year’s event! It is a blast

Great Workshop for Sculptors, Potters and Landscapers!

topofpage

Great Workshop for Sculptors, Potters and Landscapers!
Cut your firing costs! !!!! Check out the possibilities on Brent’s website!!
You have to see it to believe it!!! www.darjit.com

Saturday & and Sunday  May 22 & 23 – two work days plus slide show and lecture on the evening of Friday, May 21

“Create beautiful sculptural art and participate in the power of recycling cultural waste. Garden art and sculpture workshops use Darjit – an innovative architectural sculpting compound I designed in my native New Zealand. Darjit is made primarily from recycled paper silica powders(mining waste) and clay. Darjit is clay-like in texture, needs no firing, is user friendly, light weight when dry, and fantastic for elegant large scale work such as statues, garden walls and planters, columns and seating, outdoor kitchens, fire places, wood fired ovens, and organically shaped living spaces. It’s unique applications as a sculpting compound or finish plaster in a variety of thicknesses allows the artist to achieve an organic adobe look, round corners, niches, arches, gateways, or whatever one can imagine. By virtue of its flexibility, recycled and natural elements, and broad application of use, it is an ideal material for the artist or natural builder.

Participants will experience the joy of community learning and self expression, while manifesting the artist within who creates beauty and contributes to recycling in a meaningful way. In a
supportive environment we’ll explore 3D design, learn armature building techniques and flesh out our sculptural visions. Students begin with their design ideas, progress to building a wire netting
armature, or using a recycled form armature such as old metal frame chairs, furniture or buckets and then begin forming the frame for the sculpture. Our hands and hearts will bring the power
of our vision alive as we sculpt the final shape with the aesthetically pleasing Darjit plaster. A wide variety of finishing effects can be achieved with Darjit including embedded mosaic patterns, impressed patterns, textured finishes and hand crafted fine details.”
Brent Sumner

Participants arrive with model or sketch of their project – sometimes inspired by Brent’s Friday evening slides and lecture. Brent helps with every step of each project starting with his ingenious methods for building armatures.

Fee:  $200.00 plus materials. . Brent will supply the mesh, steel, welded wire, netting, lathe, coloring and Darjit. The fee for materials, calculated at the end of the workshop, depends on the amount each artist uses - usually ranges from $15 -$60 more for a really larger pieces.

Special fee for Returning  Participants: $170

(Those who wish to work together on one piece pay only one fee)

To reserve your place in the workshop, please pay a deposit of $50.00
post a cheque to made out to Brent Sumner to:

Looking for Softball players

topofpage

Hey, folks:

We're looking for a few semi-experienced softball players for the Cotati Croakers (yep, that's the name), which will be playing in the Petaluma Friday night league late spring and summer. If you know of anyone who wants to play, please put them in touch with me. They don't have to commit to every Friday... we just need a few subs to fill out the roster on the weeks the team is light (of course, if they want to play full time, that's cool, too).

Thanks so much!

In Defense of Beauty, by Michael Fels

topofpage

We are pleased to announce the third in a series of free public readings of my new play, In Defense of Beauty.  The reading will be held at Congregation Ner Shalom in Cotati on Wednesday, 28 April at 6:00 PM.  Discussion with the playwright and actors to follow.

In Defense of Beauty is loosely based on the life of my second cousin, M. Jean Herman.  Against all odds (and maybe reason) Jean held out against one of the largest real estate development corporations in the United States for her right to remain in her rent-controlled apartment across from Bloomindales in Manhattan.

"If you want a well acted, funny, thought-provoking evening of theater, this is it".

"Lois Pearlman is a dynamite Jean!"

There is no charge for the reading, but donations are accepted.

Closing soon: Beyond Digital and Morrie Camhi at the Petaluma Arts Center

topofpage

Closing Sunday,  April 25, 2010

Two exhibitions covering the recent history of fine art photography

The G.K. Hardt Gallery
Fine Art Photography—Beyond Digital
This is an exhibition of photography that, while considering the traditional values of craftsmanship involved in the process, experiments with a variety of new techniques for producing images on materials such as canvas, silk and metals. Curator Joseph McDonald and Juror Nick Stone have collaborated to create an exhibition that explores these new possibilities. McDonald chose works from the studios of a number of prominent Bay Area photographers including Deborah Oropallo and Joseph Doyle. Nick Stone has invited the participation of another group of artists experimenting with the new technologies among them Don and Era Farnsworth who sent digital files of their collaborative works to be woven on industrial Jacquard looms in Belgium.

Gallery 2
Portrait as Metaphor: Photographs by Morrie Camhi
After years working as a professional photographer and teacher, Morrie Camhi and his family moved to Petaluma in the 1970’s. His portfolio consists of a multitude of projects and research, including the highly successful Espejo: Reflections of the Mexican—American, Faces and Facets: The Jews of Greece, and The Prison Experience. Work from all of these series will be included along with his iconic images of Petaluma, its people and places, and the intriguing series, Ad:vantage, based on personal ads and exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1983. This exhibition has been curated by Petaluma photographer Murray Rockowitz and sponsored in part by Mary Fassbinder. Morrie Camhi is represented by the Barry Singer Gallery.

Down the Wal-Mart Low Road: What Are the Costs of a Supercenter?

Down the Wal-Mart Low Road: What Are the Costs of a Supercenter?

by Martin J. Bennett

Wal-Mart recently announced plans to convert its existing discount store in Rohnert Park to Sonoma County's first 'supercenter.' Many cash-strapped cities are tempted to hastily approve retail projects that can generate- substantial sales tax revenue given the current economic downturn. However, we should pause to consider, not only the benefits, but also the costs of the proposed supercenter for Rohnert Park and Cotati.

This week the Rohnert Park City Council will consider Wal-Mart's application to expand the existing Wal-Mart discount store in that city to a supercenter.

A supercenter is a 200,000 square foot store that sells both general merchandise and groceries. Since 1988, Wal-Mart has opened 2300 supercenters nationwide. Wal-Mart announced in 2002 that it would build more than forty of these megastores in California. By 2008 thirty-one were built, with organized grassroots opposition and environmental lawsuits blocking the others.

Wal-Mart is now the nation's largest grocer and pharmacy, with sales exceeding the combined total of major competitors, including Target, Safeway, Albertsons, Kohl's, and Kroger. How did Sam Walton develop a rural, southern discount store into the planet's largest retailer and the nation's largest employer?

According to UC Santa Barbara historian Nelson Lichtenstein in his new book, The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created A Brave New World of Business, the main reason for Wal-Mart's phenomenal success is containment of labor costs by a relentless downward pressure on wages and benefits, and a near-perfect record thwarting unionization.

Most Wal-Mart workers are the 'working poor' in America. According to the company's own reports, the average wage for a full-time Wal-Mart worker in 2007 was $10.51 an hour. The average wage of a Wal-Mart employee is 26 percent less than other large merchandise stores, and 18 percent less than large grocery stores, according to the New York University Brennan Center.

Kaiser Family Foundation reports that less than 50 percent of Wal-Mart employees receive health-care benefits. Full-time workers must wait six months to receive medical benefits, and part-time workers wait two years. Half the work force turns over annually. As a result, part-time employees, who are more than one third of the work force, rarely receive benefits. For others, high deductibles, copays, and coverage limitations make the company-provided health plan unaffordable.

Wal-Mart ensures that wages and benefits remain low by a systematic, company-wide policy to suppress unions. A report by Human Rights Watch about Wal-Mart concluded, "while many American companies use weak U.S. laws to stop workers from organizing, the retail giant stands out for the sheer magnitude and aggressiveness of its anti-union apparatus."

Between 1998-2003 the National Labor Relations Board issued 94 complaints and found that Wal-Mart illegally fired workers for union activity, forced workers to attend anti-union meetings and video screenings, spied on workers who supported unionization, and claimed workers would lose pay raises and benefits or the store would shut down if the employees voted for a union.

Not one Wal-Mart store is unionized in the U.S. When Quebec workers voted for representation by the United Food and Commercial Workers in 2005, the company closed the store.

What are the costs when a Wal-Mart supercenter opens in a community?

First, good middle-class jobs are replaced by poverty-wage jobs. Grocery prices at Wal-Mart are 15 percent lower than those of competing firms, and half of these major grocery chains, like Safeway, Raley's, and Albertsons, are unionized. The 'union premium' for combined pay and benefits is 30 percent more than nonunion. In Southern Nevada, Wal-Mart opened sixteen supercenters, and by 2002 1400 union jobs were lost when Raley's closed eighteen stores. According to Nelson Lichtenstein, 13,000 traditional supermarkets were closed and twenty-five regional chains forced into bankruptcy from 1992-2003 due to Wal-Mart.

Second, the taxpayers end up providing public assistance for Wal-Mart workers. A 2004 study by the UC Berkeley Labor Center, "The Hidden Costs of Wal-Mart," concludes that uninsured Wal-Mart employees in California rely on programs like Medi-Cal and Healthy Families at a cost of $32 million a year to the taxpayer. The report also demonstrates that Wal-Mart workers earning poverty wages rely on federal and state programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Food Stamps, Section 8 subsidized housing, and child-care assistance to make ends meet, at a cost of $54 million per year.

Third, local merchants are hurt when Wal-Mart enters a community. In 1995, economist Kenneth Stone found that, a decade after the opening of a Wal-Mart in rural Iowa, 60 percent of the retail sales captured by Wal-Mart came from existing retailers. Hundreds of grocery, apparel, hardware, and drug stores closed. University of Missouri economist Emek Basker examined county-level employment impacts of Wal-Mart from 1977-1998. She demonstrated that, for every one hundred new jobs created by Wal-Mart, fifty retail jobs and twenty wholesale jobs were lost over the next five years.

Moreover, a 2007 study by UC Berkeley economists Arin Dube and T. William Lester calculated that, "every new Wal-Mart in a county reduced the combined or aggregate earnings of retail workers by around 1.5 percent" as competition from Wal-Mart decreases both average pay rates and total employment in the local retail sector.

Sonoma State students employed in grocery and retail will be directly affected by a new Wal-Mart supercenter: stores nearby such as Pacific Market will certainly close, as the draft EIR notes. Raley's and Oliver's will face stiff competition from the supercenter while employee earnings will decline across the retail sector in Rohnert Park and Cotati.

This is an appropriate moment for an informed public dialogue, and a county -wide mobilization to oppose the megastore proposed for Rohnert Park. The Living Wage Coalition has joined with independent grocers and small businesses in Rohnert Park, the North Bay Labor Council, Sonoma County Conservation Action, the Sierra Club Sonoma Group, Go Local Sonoma County and the United Food and Commercial Workers to urge that the Rohnert Park City Council deny Wal-Mart's application for a supercenter.

Please attend the planning commission meeting on Thursday, April 22nd at 7 pm at City Hall, 130 Avram Avenue in Rohnert Park and to oppose the proposed super center.

Martin J. Bennett teaches American history at Santa Rosa Junior College, serves as a Co-Chair of the Living Wage Coalition and on the board of Sonoma County Conservation Action.

O AMOR NATURAL at Sonoma Film Institute

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EROTIC POETRY DOCUMENTARYAT SFI

A documentary about the erotic poetry of Brazilian Carlos Drummond de Andrade, O AMOR NATURAL will be presented in the coming weeks by the Sonoma Film Institute
Screenings are Sunday, May 9 at 4:00, Friday, May 14 at 7:00 and Sunday, May 16 at 4:00 in Warren Auditorium, Ives Hall on the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park. Admission is $6.00, $5.00 for non-SSU students and senior citizens, $4.00 for SFI members and children under 12, and $2.00 for SSU students.
The erotic poems of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, a household name in Brazil, remained unpublished during his lifetime, as he feared they would be deemed pornographic.

In O AMOR NATURAL (1996), elderly residents of Rio read his poems and comment on their graphic, voluptuous imagery with tremendous candor and enthusiasm. “We’re old. We’re not dead!” interjects one reader, as memories of stolen pleasures and bittersweet melancholy unfold. Says filmmaker Heddy Honigmann: “The poems sometimes functioned as a kind of corkscrew, sometimes as a glass of water, sometimes as a glass of brandy."

A Scotland or Bust! Spaghetti Feed and silent auction fundraiser on May 22, 2010 will help send the Petaluma Future Farmers of America national Dairy Judging champions team to international competition at the Royal Highland Show in Glasgow, Scotland this June. The fundraiser will be from 4:30 - 9pm at Hermann Sons Hall, 860 Western Avenue in Petaluma, and organizers welcome sponsorship donations and auction items from the agriculture community.

It’s more than a “wee” honor for four Petaluma High School Future Farmers of America members. The invitation comes from the Scottish Association of Young Farmers.

The Petaluma team represented California in the National Dairy Cattle Evaluation career development event in Indianapolis in October 2009, where they placed second in the National contest, Members include Mandy Brazil, Sam Cheda, Kelli Carstensen, and Rocco Cunningham,

The Dairy Cattle Evaluation event provides competition that develops student skills in observation and analysis, team collaboration, and problem-solving skills necessary to successfully analyze herd management records as they relate to modern dairy practices.

“All of us are another generation of Petaluma's dairy legacy to compete at the nationals,” said Mandy Brazil. “Sam and I could be considered 3rd generation members because our parents were members of Petaluma FFA. Sam Cheda and I have grandfathers who were members of Petaluma FFA’s first State Champion Dairy Cattle Judging Team. My grandfather, Don Moreda, and Sam’s grandfather, Leroy Cheda, took their state title, and competed at the National FFA Convention, held in Kentucky.”

Dominic Grossi, their coach, is a Novato dairyman and former Petaluma FFA member who has been coaching the Petaluma FFA Dairy Judging teams since 2003.

IN PETALUMA: Monday, May 24 from 7-9 pm.
(Also offered in Berkeley June 26)

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Seating is limited. To register, call 707-658-2599 or visit www.sonomabodybalance.com

"My Suicide" screening benefit for Phoenix Theater

topofpage

Feature Film “My Suicide” to Headline Benefit for Phoenix Theatre

Local filmmakers Gabriel Sunday and Eric J. Adams on hand to raise money

for Petaluma teen center that helped inspire the film.

My Suicide, the locally-produced feature film that has garnered international recognition, returns to the Petaluma with a special benefit screening for The Phoenix Theatre, Friday, June 11 at 7:30 pm.

The film stars David Carradine (in one of his last roles), Joe Mantegna, Mariel Hemingway, Nora Dunn, and Michael Welch (Twilight), Tony Hale and Brooke Nevin.

But the local draw is the film’s leading star, Gabriel Sunday, the Petaluma High graduate and rising Hollywood star who plays the lead role, and Penngrove resident Eric J. Adams, co-writer and one of the producers of film.

“We shot our first footage at the Phoenix Theater and the spirit of the Phoenix remains at the heart of this life-affirming film.  This is our way of giving back to what we believe is a true Petaluma treasure,” says Adams.

Sunday stars as Archie “Eyeball” Williams, a media-obsessed high-school geek whose world turns upside down when he announces he's going to kill himself on camera for his video class project.  Sunday also co-edited (with Jordan Miller) and co-wrote the film along with Adams and the film’s director, David Lee Miller, based on a story by Miller and his son Jordan Miller.

Also on the benefit bill, performances by Tim Kasher (the film’s composer and former Cursive band member), and Yipsy Yazz, a San Francisco gypsy jazz band headed by Petaluma native Jesse Lemme Adams.

My Suicide had its world premiere in 2009 at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Crystal Bear Award.  It has screened to sold out audiences worldwide and has won 19 additional awards since then.  The film is slated for theatrical release in October of this year.

“This will be the last Petaluma showing before it hits the theaters, and we’re really excited about this show because we’ll be filming it for a music video at the Phoenix to celebrate the film’s success,” said Sunday.

Tickers are $10 for general admission, available at The Phoenix Theatre box office: 201 Washington St. Petaluma, CA 94952; (707) 762-3565.

Important Meeting: Our wonderful community's destiny is before us....

topofpage

Dear Petaluma Neighbors,

We are requesting your attendance and support at the City Council appeal hearing scheduled for Monday, June 14th at 7pm, for the 400,000 big-box project at the Kenilworth site.

The City Council will be reviewing our appeal of the Planning Commission's approval of the poorly planned auto-centric East Washington Place (Target) project.

Petaluma’s General Plan stipulates “pedestrian oriented mixed-use” design at that site. The approved design blatantly falls short of our community’s basic standards for building development.

Don’t let Regency Centers, a multi-billion dollar corporation, threaten our city with lawsuits and manipulate our community with forged letters of support and lies. We must have a project that integrates itself with surrounding areas, neighborhoods, and is also sustainable and economically viable for our city. A true pedestrian/bike oriented mixed-use design... NOT an obsolete auto-centric strip plaza. (site plan for project)

The future of our community depends on it!

Like cities all over the nation, good planning here is no longer an option, it has become obligatory to meet the needs of our community and future generations.

This will be our last opportunity to appeal to the Council to adopt a better design. A strong turn out is the only hope we have of preventing this planning crisis from happening. We hope to see you all on June 14th!

  Sincerely,
Paul Francis & Matt Maguire

HELP! You need a Property Caretaker/Personal Assistant

topofpage

It is a time of change and that is exactly what I am doing--why fight it when you can run with it! What I am interested in is a long term property caretaking/ personal assistant position with housing (a cottage, guest house, separate suite), preferably, but not necessarily in the Petaluma area. The strongest traits I bring to you are reliability, flexibility, creativity and a great sense of humor. What? Oh yes, I do have great practical skills also: as a graphic designer, house cleaner, gardener, cook, event and party planner, and jill of many trades. Being self-employed for most of my adult life has given me a lifetime of experience to varied to list. I can assist with travel plans, organizing and paperwork; do research, run errands, shop etc. Having lived in this area for 20 years, I am well connected and have an arsenal of reliable referrals.

You--have a beautiful property and travel extensively and/or need assistance on a regular basis with your business and/or property and are in need of someone such as myself to bring some ease into your life or the ever elusive, light at the end of the tunnel.

As the saying goes: "talk is cheap." Call me, Donna Agoitia, at 707.778.6837 land, 707.338.1249 mobile

The group will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation and relaxation techniques to learn how to better tolerate and transform anxiety. We will work on trying to differentiate when one should listen to anxiety as an important signal and when one has to work around the sensations of anxiety to move forward with life.  We will look at the basics of what creates anxiety and how to manage our thoughts and sensations associated with anxiety more effectively.

Jill Silverman, MFT, is the founder and director of The Petaluma Counseling Center.  She has been in private practice for more than 16 years with offices in both San Francisco and Petaluma.  She integrates many different approaches to understanding and coping more effectively with anxiety.

Ask Carolynn (Parenting Concerns)

topofpage
Recently I noticed some new behavior (involving control issues) for Suzy (3 years old). I invited Mom to meet for a “fact finding” conference. The following is what we learned.

It all started when Suzy announced one day at lunch “I like these eggs.  I won’t eat eggs at home”.  Mom had previously mentioned to me that she thought Suzy wasn’t eating enough at home.  I assured her that she ate fine at school.  A red light went off for me.  Was Suzy using food as a means of gaining control at home?

Also I noticed that Suzy had become the new leader in her small circle of friends.  Well, she was actually more like a dictator -and not a very benevolent one, either!  Another red light.

Then, during a recent medical exam, an x-ray showed a partial bowel blockage.  Could this be more control?

I asked Mom if there were any changes at home.  In fact there were some major changes.  For example, Mom had been referring to Suzy as the baby.  When Mom asked older brother to do something for Suzy, Suzy retorted:  “Mom, I am not a baby”.  After some discussion, Mom admitted that since Suzy is the last child, she has been holding onto the baby aspect.  Good for Mom.  Not good for Suzy.  It’s always a good idea to visit the sibling relationship.  We talked about her 5-year old brother. Seems that brother is routinely chosen to perform various chores around the house.  Brother also exerts strict control over his room and possessions. Red lights are flashing all over the place now.

Of all the child development psychologists, I like the theory of Erik Erickson.  He looks at development in stages and believes that each stage has a “crisis” to be resolved before a child can successfully move to the next stage.  From 0 to 18 months, the crisis is trust vs. mistrust.  This is when the child learns/determines that his world is a safe or unsafe place, based on whether his needs are being met.  From 18 months to 3 years (approximately), the crisis is autonomy/independence vs. doubt.  This is the time for children to test, to exert control, and begin to feel a sense of independence. This is good.  If this doesn’t happen, the child will doubt their abilities, and perhaps seek control in negative ways – or worse yet, maybe be too repressed to do either.  This is bad.

Our job is to create situations where children can gain some control, independence and self-esteem in positive ways.  We need to steer them.  How?  We could begin by giving them small choices, e.g. “Do you want to wear the red or blue shirt?”  Instead of telling what to do, ask questions and let the child think and make a decision e.g. “What will happen if your glass is near the edge of the table?” or “What do you think will happen to your book if you leave it where people will be walking?”  And don’t forget jobs.  What a wonderful way to feel responsible and proud!  Children are so capable – if we give them the opportunity.  Children can sort silverware in the dishwasher or drawers; they can sort laundry, especially their own clothes; fold washcloths; they can sweep with a dustpan and brush or small broom; sponge the table, etc., etc.

Developing these skills will take a little time; and just when you have nearly reached perfection, it will be time for the next “crisis”.  Oh no!

If you are interested in learning more about Positive Parenting (and topics such as the above), please contact me for info on my next workshop.  My phone number is 769-7921 and email address is carolynnstoddlers@yahoo.com.  You are most welcome to send questions and comments  also

Housing needed for college girls with dogs

topofpage

Hi, we are two very responsible girls looking for housing for us and our 2 very well behaved dogs. We have jobs and are also going to school. We are also "horse people", working with horses in our spare time; if you know any dedicated horsemen you probably know what hard workers we are and that our idea of fun is just being able to hang out and relax; you will never have to worry about big parties going on. We are very considerate neighbors. We are looking for housing in Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cotati, or Santa Rosa. We are looking to find a place with 2 bedrooms and an enclosed yard or patio. We are looking to pay a maximum of 1000 a month. A dog door is not necessary; we can bring our own insert for a sliding glass door. Both dogs are house broken and very well behaved.

Please call Katie @ 707-758-8662.  Thank you so much!

In an Electrifying Fundraiser for the Petaluma Arts Center

May 13, 2010. Petaluma, CA – The Petaluma Arts Center is proud to announce their exciting new fundraiser, Arts d’Light! to be held Saturday, June 19th  from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm .

This inaugural event, Arts d’Light!, will offer Petaluma residents the opportunity to become a “Luminary” of the Arts Center. The patron’s reception will feature art exhibits and an “Objects d’Light” silent art auction interspersed with delightful tastings from local restaurants and wineries, while local musicians serenade everyone attending.  In keeping with the “illuminating light” theme, the highlight of this event will be illuminated art pieces from local and invited artists.  Patrons are then invited to dance into the afterglow with DJ LaShonda.

This high profile community event will certainly grow over the years and is sure to become a popular annual event.  Business sponsorship opportunities are available at “Twinkle”, “Glitter”, and “Sparkle” levels.

To become a “Luminary” of the Arts Center is $75 for the general public and $65 for members of the Arts Center.  Tickets and information on this event or to become a member of the Arts Center are available at www.petalumaartscouncil.org or 762-5600.

The Petaluma Arts Center, home of the Petaluma Arts Council, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free art access to the citizens of Petaluma.  As the premier center of creative expression for this thriving community, the Petaluma Arts Center has become noted for its art galleries, classes, concerts, discussions, workshops, performances and other community events.  The Arts Center is located at 230 Lakeville Street in the historic train depot on the corner of Lakeville and East Washington Streets.

Learn the valuable skill of building your own cob pizza/bread wood-fired oven in your backyard from Miguel “Micah” Elliott of Living Earth Structures (www.livingearthstructures.com). Cob ovens can bake a pizza in just three minutes, and retain heat for up to twelve hours! We’ll talk about key techniques: installing the foundation, insulating the floor and walls, sculpting the oven, and creating adobe bricks. Join us to sculpt a cob oven at the home of George and Ellen Beeler, incredible Daily Actors!

The second day of the workshop, be a part of the creative sculpting of the oven to make it come alive in an exciting design. Come away with creative recipes for wood-fired cooking, and learn to use the oven. We’ll do an earthen plaster sealant and explore some possible roof structure designs that can be built to provide further protection.

An exciting day of honing our eco-skills while playing in the mud!
