Yoga For Stress Relief - Wednesday Evenings 5:30 - 6:45 - Karen Cappa

|
Yoga For Stress Relief - Wednesday Evenings 5:30 - 6:45
Bodyworks Yoga and Stress Management Center
490 Second St., Petaluma
Attaining a Sense of Ease - One Asana at a Time
Is your stress running you? Now you can take back your life by learning how to truly feel at ease. Asana is a yoga pose or posture
-one Sanskrit meaning is "comfortable seat"- that helps you reunite your mind with your body. Asana practice will focus your mind's attention into your body, so you learn to move in more unified harmony. The result? No matter what stresses you face, you can remain "comfortably seated" and centered.
In these classes, we will explore the ways to develop a genuine sense of ease within, using guided visualization, restorative yoga and asana practice. During each session, we will experience the bliss of conscious breathing, examine our inner vision and discover how to move our body in ways that generate the energy and awareness we need to restore ease and increase the happiness in our life.
Suitable for the novice or intermediate yoga practitioner. Come for the yoga, leave feeling open and clear - with a smile on your face.
Karen Cappa has been a Bodyworker and Hypnotherapist for over 20 years. She is a group facilitator for Memorial Hospice and Final Passages Educational Foundation. She is an Ordained Priestess and Ceremonialist as well as an avid gardener and wild woman. Her passion for Yoga has been alive ever since she took her first yoga class in 1969. In 2011, she became a Certified Yoga Teacher by completing the Integrative Yoga Teacher Training at Bodyworks. Her lifelong love of yoga has allowed her to learn from experience how yoga practice, meditation, and conscious breathing can bring deep calm to the body, mind and spirit. She also loves to laugh, so be prepared.

The 3 Myths That are Causing Your Back Pain

|
Are you tired of having back or joint pain? You can learn how to be free of pain! Learning what is the underlying cause of your pain will enable you to make changes that eliminate your pain. Almost everyone in highly industrialized countries has adopted a modern posture that is misaligned and so pervasive we can't even see it. Many treatments don't address the underlying cause of pain.
Learning a set of simple, specific guidelines can bring you relief from pain anytime, anywhere. The same guidelines that take away your pain also straighten your spine.
Come to a 2 hour Balance Method workshop - "The 3 Myths That are Causing Your Back Pain". Mention where you heard about this for your complimentary ticket!
IN PETALUMA: Tuesday, April 24 from 7:15-9:15 pm.
(Also offered in Berkeley May 5)
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Seating is limited. To register, call 707-658-2599 or visit www.sonomabodybalance.com
Why do people in some countries have no back pain? 80% of the population in the United States suffers from back pain, compared to only 5% in many other countries, such as Portugal and Greece. These healthy people move slightly differently than we do. The teaching of the Balance Center is based on more than 35 years of research on these healthy populations. When you stand, bend, sit, walk, and sleep as these people do, your pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated.
SIX WAYS THIS APPROACH IS UNIQUE:
-Balance is based on studying healthy people
-No special devices, special equipment or special chairs are needed
-No exercises or radical positions are required
-Balance dramatically improves your posture
-You use this information immediately in your car, at work, even at the
movies
-A slight shift in position brings relief
WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE RESULTS OF THE BALANCE METHOD?
“For 17 years I spent thousands of dollars for medical treatment and loss of work time to find a solution to relieve lower back pain due to an auto accident. I sought treatment using acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy, osteopathic and more. These treatments were helpful for a short time, but it did not teach me the proper body mechanics for lifelong relief. Surgery and continuous use of drugs was not a viable option.
The classes I took from Dana at Sonoma Body Balance were my saving grace. I learned how to properly sit, sleep, walk, drive, bend, lift, etc. I have not experienced any back pain since completing the classes.”
- Wayland Lew
“I have successfully used Balance Center instructions as part of a comprehensive treatment program for my patients with painful spinal conditions.”
- William Firtch, M.D.
"This class was a revelation for me. It increased my awareness of being out of Balance and I learned simple changes I can make to become more balanced and pain free. It was powerful learning what I can do on a daily basis to avoid pain. Dana taught us simple techniques to use everyday to correct bad posture and live pain free. It’s given me hope and has been a life changing experience that has put me back in control ."
- Julie Shapiro, Oakland, CA
"Before I took the Balance class, I experienced chronic neck, low back, hip, and gluteal tension, in spite of the fact that I received weekly chiropractic adjustments. While taking the class, my tension decreased significantly. The tools I learned in the class also enabled me to teach basic sitting skills to patients which helped eliminate a major cause of recurring back pain for many of them."
-Jay Bunker, Chiropractor
Taught by Dana Davis, MA, Senior Certified Instructor by the Balance Center in Palo Alto and Certified Yoga Teacher. Class includes slides, practice sitting and bending in Balance, anatomy and individual hands-on guidance. Enrollment is limited. For more information, visit www.sonomabodybalance.com. Petaluma Friends of Recreation

|
Petaluma Friends of Recreation (--PFOR), an all-volunteer group representing most of the leagues, teams and recreation interests in town came together in 2009 because of the dilapidated, neglected city fields and facilities. City funding for parks and recreation has never been adequate and has been decimated during the recession. Worse, the city has no capital replacement budget for essential features such as the boiler at the Swim Center or the roof on the community center. PFOR realized that their best chance to save these important community assets, rested with a combined appeal for financing.
Working with municipal finance expert, Craig Hill who lent his time pro bono, PFOR explored every financing option including bonds, sales tax and parcel tax. They chose the parcel tax. Even though it requires two-thirds voter approval, it cannot be re-appropriated by the city for other purposes.
PFOR started with 24 projects that had been identified by the Music Parks and Recreation Commission thru a series of community meetings. That list was narrowed eventually to 8. Together, these eight projects serve toddlers through seniors from every corner of Petaluma, and run the gamut from trails, fields and tennis courts, to parks, playgrounds and recreation centers. Most importantly, the eight can be financed, entirely or substantially by the revenue which could be reasonably generated by a parcel tax.
Next, PFOR raised $15k and hired Godbe & Assoc. to conduct a poll of 300 Petaluma voters, last summer. The eight projects received a very positive response and 61% of those polled said they would support a parcel tax of $68/yr. for 9 years.
Based on that research, PFOR is attempting to qualify a measure for the November ballot which would tax single family residences @ $52/yr. (or, a dollar-a-week) for 15 years, with rates varying between $52 and $500 for commercial, industrial and multi-family parcels. PFOR attempted to keep each rate as low as possible while still generating the $1.24m needed annually for the projects. Proceeds will be used to purchase bonds which will allow construction to begin right away, with funds also available for immediate repairs and for on-going maintenance. Seniors can apply for an exemption from the tax.
PFOR has visited nearly every service club and civic group in Petaluma and heard resoundingly a deep distrust of city government. Therefore, a Citizens Oversight Committee was written into the initiative as part of a process to do everything legally possible to keep the city and state from usurping the parcel tax revenues, and ensuring that those funds are ONLY spent on the eight projects as specified in the measure.
PFOR is presently collecting 4600 signatures of Petaluma voters. That process, which involves only grassroots volunteers and no paid signature gatherers, must be completed by May 15. They are also raising money towards the $85,000 cost of getting a measure on the ballot that can secure a 2/3 vote. Volunteer petition circulators, petition signers, donors and anyone else who wants to help are warmly welcomed. Go to www.PFOR.info to donate, volunteer or learn more.

Mendocino Stories and Music Series "Welcome in the May"

|
Welcome in the May with Holly Tannen and Amelia Hogan on Friday, May 4, 2012 in the Mendocino Hotel’s Garden Room. Mendocino Stories and Music Series will feature Holly and Amelia together, debuting Holly's new songs, The Flower of Australia and The Battle Hymn of the International Subversives. Music starts at 7:30PM.
Amelia Hogan is a compelling and authentic Irish sean nos (old style) singer. She'll sing Irish sean nos (old style) songs in Irish and English.
Well-known in our area, Holly Tannen sings to centuries-old melodies, and then you notice she's singing about the Internet, or Beavis and Butthead, or northern California marijuana growers. She sings these songs as if the ancient ballads were always about things like that (and in a sense, they were.) She also knows just when and how to aim for the heart with something more serious.

Rebop Deluxe - Jump Swing Blues and Boogie Band

|
On the second night of the “Mendocino All-Star Music Weekend, Saturday, May 26, Mendocino Stories & Music Series presents "Rebop Deluxe". This five-piece jump, swing, blues and boogie band features Karl Schoen, Sharon Garner, Pilar Duran, Laura Maione and Tom Rickard. Music starts at 8:00PM at the Hill House of Mendocino.
These musicians are legends of the north coast jazz and R&B scene. They have come together to create a new band featuring fun tunes and lively rhythms. Premier guitarist Pilar Duran, known from Frida’s Circus and Rogerwood, is versed in all musical styles from jazz to funk, blues to pop. On lead vocals, Sharon Garner sang with the funk band Dysfunction, is in a jazz duo with Billy Shieves and also sings with the Boonville Big Band.
Karl Schoen doubles sax and flute. He's been entertaining here on the coast since the seventies playing jazz, blues, rock, and salsa. One of the most fun bass players to experience, Laura Maione always seems to be playing with a sly smile or a great big grin on her face. Also in the band is jazz drummer Tom Rickard.

Steven Bates Trio

|
Join us at the Hill House of Mendocino on Sunday, May 27, when Mendocino Stories & Music Series presents Steven Bates Trio. This is third night of the Mendocino All-Star Music Weekend. Rock and Roll Dance music with Steven Bates, Ralph Humphrey and Johnny Bush starts at 8PM.
The Trio, featuring Steven Bates on guitar and vocals, will be doing a combination of Steven’s original music and rock and roll dance tunes. A
Fort Bragg native, Bates started playing music at school dances by age 13. After graduating, he set off to Southern California. Playing with many different bands and individuals, he loves that opportunity to play with so many musicians around our area.
Ralph Humphrey on drums is currently the drummer with Dancing with the Stars, although he's had a fantastic music career outside of that. He has played on hundreds of records by everyone from Al Jarreau and Manhattan Transfer to Frank Zappa and Wayne Shorter. He has also devoted a large portion of his time to education, developing the first percussion program at Percussion Institute of Technology.
Comptche’s own Johnny Bush will be playing bass, and perhaps joining in on some vocals. He plays just about every instrument he has ever touched, including drums and saxophone. Starting out in the 70’s at Mendocino Community School’s studio run by Philo Hayward, John plays with lots of local musicians and bands, including Foxglove and The Mighty T-Bones.

The 3 Myths Causing Your Back Pain

|
Are you tired of having back or joint pain? You can learn how to be free of pain! Learning what is the underlying cause of your pain will enable you to make changes that eliminate your pain. Almost everyone in highly industrialized countries has adopted a modern posture that is misaligned and so pervasive we can't even see it. Many treatments don't address the underlying cause of pain.
Learning a set of simple, specific guidelines can bring you relief from pain anytime, anywhere. The same guidelines that take away your pain also straighten your spine.
Come to a 2 hour Balance Method workshop - "The 3 Myths That are Causing Your Back Pain":
IN PETALUMA: Tuesday, May 29 from 7:15-9:15 pm. (no charge)
IN BERKELEY: Saturday, May 5 from 6-8 pm ($10)
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Seating is limited. To register, call 707-658-2599 or visit www.sonomabodybalance.com
Why do people in some countries have no back pain? 80% of the population in the United States suffers from back pain, compared to only 5% in many other countries, such as Portugal and Greece. These healthy people move slightly differently than we do. The teaching of the Balance Center is based on more than 35 years of research on these healthy populations. When you stand, bend, sit, walk, and sleep as these people do, your pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated.
SIX WAYS THIS APPROACH IS UNIQUE:
-Balance is based on studying healthy people
-No special devices, special equipment or special chairs are needed
-No exercises or radical positions are required
-Balance dramatically improves your posture
-You use this information immediately in your car, at work, even at the
movies
-A slight shift in position brings relief
WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE RESULTS OF BALANCE?
“I have successfully used Balance Center instructions as part of a comprehensive treatment program for my patients with painful spinal conditions.”
- William Firtch, M.D.
"For 17 years I spent thousands of dollars for medical treatment and loss of work time to find a solution to relieve lower back pain due to an auto accident.
I have not experienced any back pain since completing the classes."
- Wayland Lew
Lucid Dreamer (formerly Satori Express) has performed original, creative power pop for last ten years at venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including many festive shows at Aqus Cafe.

If we don't reach our goal, we won't get any money (that's how Kickstarter works).
We are halfway there, we just need a few more good hearted music lovers to kick in some bucks. Please go to the link below, take a listen, and consider making a pledge BEFORE MAY 11th!

Bodywork is some of the most sacred work a person can do. At the same time it can stress parts of your body, creating physical imbalances and taking both a physical and emotional toll.
Learn new ways to maintain the integrity of your body, increasing its resilience and well being, using the Egoscue Method. Egoscue is an innovative alignment therapy system that uses a wide variety of exercises and stretches to re-balance the body.
You will learn how bodywork often affects your own structural alignment and how you can use simple exercises to counteract these tendencies. This will enable you to more effectively serve your clients joyously, free from pain and with more endurance.
I discovered the Egoscue Method through my career as a long-term bodyworker. As a Certified Egoscue Practitioner, I have used this approach to support my clients in resolving many difficult musculoskeletal conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, spinal herniations, scoliosis, back pain, shoulder, hip, knee, foot pain and more. I continue to use Egoscue to keep my own body balanced and pain free.
This workshop will offer:
~ self-evaluation tools to enable you to assess your individual body's needs
~ exercises that can quickly adjust important areas of your body during a busy day
~ activities that can be done at the beginning and/or end of the work day to keep your body balanced and in optimum condition
About Jeff Rooney
Jeff Rooney has been a massage therapist focusing on orthopedic conditions since 1998 and an Egoscue Method Practitioner since 2003. He has successfully worked with clients age 8 through 97, from marathon runners to those seeking to avoid joint replacement surgery. He has recently moved to Sebastopol and is eager to bring the benefits of Egoscue to this area.

Local Filmmaker seeks help funding Documentary on Small
Businesses

|
Inventing Survival, a new documentary
Small business owners must employ alternative tools and tactics in
order to survive on the same field as corporate giants, and they must
often invent new methods to adapt to the changing field itself.
I want to explore this battlefield and find out what entrepreneurs are
doing to ensure their survival, what they're up against, and what
works. More importantly, I want to lend a voice to small business
owners that will hopefully start a conversation among consumers and
highlight what's at stake.
Kickstarter is a crowd-sourced funding mechanism that allows
independent creators like myself to fund large projects. In stead of a
few people fronting large sums of money, many people can help get a
project going with just a few dollars each.
Please consider lending a hand to my project, and please help spread
the word. All information can be found at the following link:

Pelican Art Galley hosts Art at the Source Preview Exhibit

|
Pelican Art Gallery presents Preview exhibit for Art at the Source.
There are two large open studio events in Sonoma County. The first is Art at the Source, put on by the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. The event encompasses the first two weekends in June.
In years past, Art at the Source has been limited to West County. This is the first year that a Petaluma gallery is participating in the preview exhibit. Pelican Art Gallery will be host to several dozen artists in a Preview Exhibit running from May 10th - June 30th. Artist reception for this exhibit will be held during the May Art Walk on Saturday, May 12th from 4 - 7pm. Stop by to meet the artists & enjoy the spectrum of artwork.
Petaluma certainly fits the description on the Art at the Source website: "Renowned for its artist community and bohemian culture, Sonoma County is rich with stunning landscapes, superb cuisine, and world-class wineries making it the perfect getaway to discover art." We're proud that Petaluma is being recognized as an art destination". Several Petaluma artists will be showing their work during this event because of the hard work that Jan Schultz has done with the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Jan is a sculptor working in metal. Her art has been shown in several galleries in Petaluma. Discover the other artists at http://artatthesource.org.
The 18th annual Art at the Source Tour features 155 artists in 96 studio locations, and the diversity includes painters, sculptors, potters, jewelers, photographers, glass, wood and fiber artists. Many studios have more than one artist. Pelican Art Gallery is located at 143 Petaluma Blvd North. Contact at www.pelicanart.com or 707-773-3393. Art Opening Henry Washer "Works From The Back House"

|
Please join us for Henry Washer's first solo show!
"To mark my 21st birthday, I decided to produce a body of work for my
first solo art show. This show is about exploring questions that I face
as a young man growing and entering the world. I am drawn to wood
carving as my main medium because i enjoy dealing with a material that
yields consequences, if not done carefully, and the romance of creating
art through the process of destruction. I have always been interested
in mechanics of any sort. The irrefutable cause and effects of
machinery provide a safe haven for me in a world where almost nothing
is straightforward. For this show, I chose my subjects to be things
that i can physically see or touch, because the life in front of me is
my greatest influence. For me, a picture or video is never enough to
capture a scene or event and i want my art to share that. In this
modern world, a lot is simplified to fit on a computer screen, I strive
for my pieces to have a tangible interactive quality that is impossible
to reduce to pixels. Each piece is created with some sort of unique
aspect or challenge to it, making for an one of a kind experience ."

Tatsu delivery this week: Friday May 25th only!

|
Hello Tatsu Fans!
I hope everyone is enjoying this fabulous weather!
As my business model morphs and grows to focus on corporate meetings and lunches, I have had to shave down deliveries to individuals to Fridays only for now. But don't fret, schmooze your boss into buying lunch for the whole office, order a day or two ahead of time, and you can get your Tatsu fix Tuesday, or Thursday, or… As long as I know in advance I can accommodate most large orders.
Delivery this week is for Friday, May 25th only. Please order early so I can get lunches to all of you on time and HOT!
I am attaching this week's menu as well as my corporate party menu. Party platters have been popular and are a more ecological alternative to individual take out containers (even though they are compostable…).
Questions about private parties and events? Just ask!
Cheers,
Janice aka "Tatsugirl"

The mind-blowing summer of The Mighty Groove

Summer’s heating up for The Mighty Groove: Our schedule includes TMG’s debut at the Redwood Café in Cotati. It’s a great spot with yummy food and a newly opened outdoor beer garden. Everybody’s been telling us to play there so here we come – June 23rd. 9pm.
On July 8th. we’ll be on the Kentucky street – downtown Petaluma, right in the middle of the annual Art and Garden Festival. We’ll be sharing the stage with other great local bands and a surprise headliner. Get there early for the few choice tables!
We have back-to-back events in August: Thursday, August 2nd. radio KJZY is presenting us as part of their summer “jazzy after work” series. That’s at Tres Hombres in Petaluma – 6pm to 8pm (or later – did someone say 150 types of tequila?!)
Friday, August 3rd. finds us under the tent at the Rohnert Park farmers market – also 6pm to 8pm. This is a fun destination and a groovy way to start your weekend.
Come down and party with us at any of these cool events, when you do be sure to ask about the secret, invite-only happenin' thang in July.

Learning to Love a Wounded World By Dianne Monroe

|
In his book Eaarth, Bill McKibben explains that the effects of man-made global warming are not a thing of the future, but are already here now. Human activity for the past centuries has already changed the Earth we thought we knew. How can we learn to love this damaged Earth that human activity (both knowingly and unknowingly) has created? How do we wrap our brains and hearts around something this huge? And how do we do this in a way that offers healing, renewal, genuine hope and a path forward?
