The Cavanagh Center, on the corner of 8th and G Street, Petaluma

Join Janine Björnson to discover natural building with cob. Cob is a durable, non-toxic, locally available mixture of clay, sand, straw, water and earth. Some of the world's oldest structures are constructed from cob, yet if allowed to breakdown though exposure to the elements cob would completely return to the earth from where it came. When wet the pliable material lends itself to creative shapes to form-fit any location. Learn about input material selection, foundations, mixing, building and upkeep through the hands-on construction of a community bench at the Cavanagh Center food forest. We’ll return in September with our Earthen Plaster and Sealant workshop to seal our creations (package deal for both workshops available). Cob building is community building! No prior experience required.
